It lacks features and needs improvement in a number of areas. However, Atlas VPN’s free plan is a winner in the areas that matter with a decent amount of data, decent speeds and a surprising success in unblocking.
Privacy and logging
Atlas VPN’s apps are able to deliver on the technical basics. Secure encryption through the WireGuard protocol and the IKEv2/IPSec protocols protects your data from being spied on by snoopers. Private DNS secures your browsing history, and a kill switch keeps you safe even if your VPN connection fails.
Our tests revealed that the apps also worked just as advertised. The kill switch had some usability issues (see the full Atlas VPN review for details), but it correctly blocked our internet traffic when the VPN failed. The apps also passed our leak test and there were no signs of DNS leaks or other issues.
The company does not always treat your privacy as we would like. Providing your email address will automatically sign you up to receive emails from Atlas VPN unless otherwise specified. The Windows application also transmits information about your usage to Atlas VPN, unless the feature is turned off. Although there is no reason to believe that the app is sharing any harmful information, we believe that providers should not take such actions without your permission.
We were also interested in the Atlas VPN website when Blacklight Privacy Inspector (opens new tab) discovered that it contained many web trackers and technologies. (Even Atlas VPN seems concerned in its previous review, we discovered that its tracker blocker blocked two trackers on its own website.)
There is a small plus this time, which is the assurance of an independent audit, but it is basic and only covers the iOS app. TunnelBear is a company that conducts annual audits of its servers, apps and other services, and is able to compete with it.
Windows app
Atlas VPN’s Windows application looks more cluttered than the others, with tabs, status information, and menus scattered all over the console. It just feels a little more complicated than it really needs to be.
The list of places has its own problems. For example, the free servers are not listed at the top of the list. You might spend too much time scrolling through the entire set to find what’s available. There is no Favorites system to speed up reconnections.
If your VPN requirements aren’t too complicated, it doesn’t matter much. You can click Connect to connect to the nearest Atlas VPN server. When you’re done, click disconnect. The app connected in seconds and was able to deliver decent speeds throughout our review.
Users who are experienced will not be impressed by the app’s simple feature list. WireGuard support helps deliver good speeds for a free VPN, and the kill switch is able to do a good job of protecting you if the VPN is disconnected. But as we mentioned above, the paid app’s automatic connection feature, tracker blocking and data breach monitoring are not listed in this list. And neither the free nor the paid Windows apps have split tunneling and stealth support for bypassing VPN blocking and custom DNS settings, protocol tweaks, or anything even remotely advanced.
Mac app
Atlas VPN’s Mac application is similar to the Windows version. This is good news when you use both (learn one and you’ll immediately know how to use the other).
One difference is in the location list the Mac application sorts alphabetically by continent, unlike the Windows version. Asia is at the top. You must scroll down to access the free servers. It’s a minor issue, but would it really have been that difficult for both Mac and Windows apps to display the same locations in the same order?
It’s not really a big deal when you just click the Connect button. And overall, the app performed well for us, connecting quickly and delivering reliable speeds. Factor in the generous 2GB of daily data and that’s good news.
The feature list for Windows is identical to Windows. It does not include kill switch IKEv2 or WireGuard protocol support. Atlas VPN’s SafeBrowse is an additional feature designed to block malicious websites. It’s a little surprising considering that the Atlas VPN website says that SafeBrowse is only available in the paid version, but hey, we’re not complaining.
Android and iOS apps
While most providers try to make their mobile apps look and work similar to the way they work, the Atlas VPN Android and iOS releases are very different.
The Android app has an elegant portrait interface that includes the Connect button as well as the bar menu. The iOS version’s distinctive layout makes the most of the screen real estate, with the Connect button, location and other details visible at the front.
The features here are very similar. The desktop version comes with WireGuard protocol support as well as IKEv2 protocol support. A kill switch protects you in case the VPN is lost. The Android app adds an additional bonus feature of split tunneling, but there is nothing else to add.
While we don’t expect much from the free VPN service, what you get is sufficient. One tap and you’re online quickly, speeds are decent and we’ve had no VPN drops or other issues.
Performance
We weren’t able to run our full VPN performance tests on Atlas VPN Free, as they require much more data than the 10GB monthly allowance. We were able to run 10 SpeedTest app tests from the UK data center using 1 Gbps connections. This was more than enough to test the capabilities of the service.
The results were quite impressive, with our WireGuard connection achieving a median speed of 320 Mbps. This is slightly less than what we would expect to see from paid VPNs, but it beats most free alternatives. Recent tests revealed that only Proton VPN and PrivadoVPN scored better than the others.
Atlas VPN warns that their free service does not offer any support for unblocking streaming sites. Our experience has shown us that free VPNs can provide much more than you might expect. We decided to test it anyway. And sure enough, there was a surprise: Although Atlas VPN Free failed with American Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Max, it unblocked Disney Plus.
The company claims that its free service is compatible with P2P, but we prefer to test this as well. It does, and we were able to download torrents from locations in the Netherlands, New York, and Los Angeles.
Atlas VPN’s support staff can help if you have problems with these features. Although live chat is only available to paying customers, we were able to send an email test question. This can lead to a long delay. However, we received a quick and friendly response within three minutes. We waited longer than that to receive a response via live chat from some of the competitors.
Final verdict
Atlas VPN has a lot of small issues – privacy issues as well as lack of features, app design and it doesn’t really stand out in any aspect. These issues are not critical and it is a decent free VPN. It’s fast, has 10GB of data, P2P, and has some unblocking success. Give it a shot.
