You bought a VPN subscription and now you hate it. Maybe you can’t use it with your favorite video streaming service. There may have been a price change and your VPN is no longer an affordable option. Maybe your old VPN just received unfavorable media coverage due to some sort of scheme, or the breach happened. Whatever the reason, switching VPNs can be done easily if you know what to do.
Out With the Old, In With the New
The majority of people use VPNs through client apps. These are the apps for users that allow you to turn VPN connection on and off, select VPN servers and use all other tools provided by VPNs as part of their subscriptions. The process of removing a VPN from your computer often involves removing the client software and installing a new one. Here are some best VPNs to guide you in choosing the best one.
One important thing to keep in mind whenever you install new software: beware of scam websites and malware that pretends to be user-friendly software. Make sure you have anti-virus software installed on your computer in case of.
Installing a New VPN on Android
It’s the same procedure to replace any other Android app by replacing an old VPN. Hold and press the app icon, then drag it to the top of the screen, where it says Uninstall. Next, head to the Google Play Store to download the app to use as a VPN.
Some VPN services provide Android apps that you can download directly from the developer and install them on your device via sideloading. This can be used to offer features that aren’t allowed on Google Play, or for particularly privacy-conscious people who don’t want anything to do with the Google App Store. Side loading is not something I would recommend. Downloading malicious apps that you think are safe can lead to serious consequences, even though Google has made many security improvements over the years.
Installing a New VPN on iOS
Similar to Android, replacing a VPN app on iOS is like replacing any other app. Press and hold the app icon until the context menu appears, then tap Delete app. Once the app icon is gone, go to the App Store to download the official app for your VPN.
Installing a New VPN on macOS
If you downloaded the app through the macOS App Store, you can use the App Store to remove it. Go to the App Store, click on your account name in the bottom left corner of the rail, then scroll through the list of apps you have installed. Click the “. . .” and select menu Delete application, then select.
If the app is not installed through the App Store, you will need to install it manually. This also applies to apps downloaded from the App Store. Apps running on macOS are usually self-contained, so while macOS doesn’t come with an uninstaller for apps, it’s simple to remove them. Open a new Finder window and click the Applications folder shortcut in the Favorites sidebar. You can also click the Go menu to select Applications from the drop-down list.
Find the VPN you want to get rid of, then click and drag the icon to the trash. You can also right-click or two-finger tap the icon and select Move to Trash.
In truth, it probably won’t get all the traces(Opens in a new window) that an app can leave on your computer, but it should do a decent job. If something is wrong, don’t worry, we will help you solve the problem in the following article.
It’s time to ditch the old VPN and install your sparkling new VPN. Whether you’ll find your VPN of choice in the official macOS app store is still a matter of debate. You can start your search here, but most of the time you’ll need to download the app directly from the VPN’s website.
Before you start your download, make sure to check the site URL. A valid URL must be preceded by an HTTPS or the lock symbol in your browser. Once your download is complete, follow the instructions from the VPN company. This usually involves clicking and dragging the VPN app to your Applications folder. Be aware that when you install an app from the web, macOS will ask you for confirmation the first time you start it.
Installing a New VPN on Windows
Unlike macOS, apps on Windows are a problem. Unlike macOS, Microsoft also provides a dedicated software removal tool. Click on the search box on the taskbar and type Add or remove software. From this window, you can browse to find the old VPN or use the search bar that comes with it. Click on it and then click on the uninstall button.
The next thing that is likely to happen is one of two. Either the Add or Remove Software feature will remove the software, or a custom uninstaller is created from the VPN. You will be presented with different options and uninstallation is the most common. It is likely to convince you to continue on this path and attract you again. Be resilient no matter how many pets cry.
After deleting the old VPN app, it’s time to find the new one. I don’t usually bother with the Windows App Store for VPNs, but it’s not impossible to search. If you decide to download the app directly from your VPN provider, be sure to look for HTTPS or an icon with a padlock in your browser. The installer will guide you through the process once your download is complete.
New VPN Not Working? Try These Tips
While it’s relatively easy to remove old VPN client software from your computer, there are a few difficulties. Some VPNs leave behind a mess and may leave network settings that don’t belong to them.
These changes are generally safe and will have no effect on the operation of another VPN. However, this is not always the case. Having tried a variety of VPNs on the same machine, I’m aware that if there’s a problem switching between VPNs, it’s probably one of the ones I’ll discuss below. .
With that in mind, you should consider these steps optional and only to be taken if your new VPN isn’t working as it should. All of the steps I’ve listed here are for situations where the previous VPN didn’t work properly. These tips were passed on to NordVPN by me. They agreed they would work, but pointed out that you don’t need them.
At first, let’s talk about the basics. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. You can check if the VPN client software has been updated or in a newer version. Reinstall the VPN client software, then reboot. You’d be surprised how often this succeeds. But, you read PCMag so I’m sure to say you won’t.
If that doesn’t work for you, uninstall the new VPN and make sure you’ve removed the old VPN using the advice above. After trying the suggestions below, install the new VPN and test it again.
VPN Troubleshooting on Android
Open the Settings app, then tap Network & Internet, scroll down, then tap VPN. There should only be VPNs that you have installed (which shouldn’t be). If you notice anything unusual, make sure you’ve removed the VPN’s Android app. If you did this but still see the deleted VPN listed, click the gear icon, then tap Forget VPN.
VPN Troubleshooting on iOS
Open the Settings app and tap General & device management > VPN. Or, just go to the main page and search for VPN. You will find profiles for all VPNs that have been installed on your device on the VPN settings screen. If you see something you didn’t expect, be sure to delete the VPN app. Click on the entry to manually delete it.
VPN Troubleshooting on macOS
Click Network in the System Preferences application. On the left side of the screen, you will see the list of available services. Check the list to see if any are associated with the VPN you removed. If so, click it, then click the minus sign button at the bottom of the list.

VPN Troubleshooting on Windows
As mentioned above, Windows can be messy. These are just a few of the more common issues I’ve encountered, but they’re by no means exhaustive.
You can also visit Add or Remove Software. You can find additional TAP, TUN or VPN drivers. These drivers may be labeled as VPN drivers and sometimes have useful labels. They should be available in the network connections control panel. You can find more information about the source there. If the VPN uninstaller missed them, you can try uninstalling them yourself.
Sometimes there is no solution and your new VPN will not work. For me, that’s when I do a Windows System Restore. There may be more accurate methods to handle this, but I’ve never been specific when it comes to Windows. This step is not necessary if you do not want to spend time and effort reinstalling the software.
As this is a system-wide restore, make sure all your most important files are protected first. To locate the recovery settings screen, you can use the search box on the taskbar. Under Reset this PC, click Get started. Then you can decide if you want to save your files but lose your apps or delete them all. I’ve found the Keep my files option to be a good choice in these situations. Also, it will erase a lot of files from your machine, so make sure you’re backed up and ready.
How to Pick a New VPN
When choosing a new VPN, it is important to consider the weaknesses of your old VPN. Find out what worked and what didn’t. In our reviews, we try to cover a wide range of features for each product, so be sure to start there.
Some weaknesses However, some problems are difficult to solve. The speed, for example, is very variable. For example, a VPN may have higher speeds depending on where you live relative to the server and the time of day. Access to streaming may also be affected by changes in the weather. While VPNs do their best to make sure streaming services are available to customers, streaming services like Netflix do their best to block VPNs.
While it’s impossible to know the quality of a VPN until you’ve actually used it, you can check the server breakdown. The farther your data has to be transported to the VPN server, the more impact you will have on internet speeds. Some VPNs provide plenty of data on server locations, even at the city level, but others limit the information you can access to only countries where the company has servers. At a minimum, the VPN should have servers in the country where you live and where you want your traffic to appear.
Although you can save money by signing up for long-term subscriptions, I don’t recommend it. Instead, opt for a shorter-term subscription so you can try the service at home. Once you are happy with the service, you can proceed with a longer term commitment. There are also free VPNs to review and a great selection of cheap VPNs as well.
When trying to use a VPN, pay attention to how it looks and feels. Consider switching to another VPN if you can’t identify key elements or it looks too ugly. Not worth your time with unattractive apps.
Be sure to research each VPN’s privacy policies. The most reliable VPNs will be transparent about how they work and what steps the company takes to protect your privacy. Find out if the company has passed a third-party audit. Our VPN reviews break down each company’s privacy policy and assess whether the audits were adequate in scope. A VPN that exposes your privacy doesn’t do a good job.
Last note: While changing VPN affiliation isn’t difficult, VPN can’t help protect you. We suggest using multi-factor authentication whenever you can, and using a password manager to create unique and complex passwords for each service or site you use, and also running antivirus software on your computer.
