PSA: Google One VPN not working with Pixel 7 in Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2

When running preview software, there are always software-related risks and potential pain points. Not everything works perfectly, but the latest issue means that the Google One VPN for Pixel 7 is not available when running the Android 13 QPR2 Beta.

Google offers a free VPN for Pixel 7 that provides an extra layer of security on mobile and Wi-Fi networks. This was rolled out shortly after the Pixel 7 series started shipping in late December 2022. It’s since become a nice add-on feature, giving you extra peace of mind on potentially insecure networks.

Undoubtedly a great addition as those running the current Android 13 QPR2 Beta may experience problems when trying to activate the Google One VPN on their Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. When trying to turn on the option in the Google One app, toggling the Turn on VPN option is temporary and immediately disconnects or doesn’t start. You’ll hit a roadblock as your pixel will falsely tell you to “Sign In” and “Check Your Subscription Status.”

It’s likely that Google has disabled the VPN for Pixel 7 users running Android 13 QPR2 Beta, but it seems even some who subscribed to the 2TB storage tier have encountered issues. Some complaints on the /r/Android_Beta subreddit suggest that they too were unable to connect despite having a paid plan and older Pixels like the 6 series.

In these cases, a supposed solution requires you to “force” the Google One app in Settings. You may also need to clear app cache and data and then restart your phone. In some cases, if you log back into the Google One app, you can access the VPN service. We can confirm that this process will not work for those trying to access the free VPN with the Pixel 7. When restarting in the Google One app, the VPN feature is listed as “Premium Feature”.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a one-size-fits-all solution that works for everyone other than reverting to stable Android 13 builds. This certainly suggests that Google has disabled VPN access, at least for now. If you’ve had this annoying error, at least you know it’s not your device and it’s due to the software build. Creating a bug report on the beta feedback application can help ensure that this is fixed quickly when the next beta update arrives.
