Google will soon crack down on VPN apps that block ads on the Android platform.
The tech giant, which still derives most of its massive revenue from advertising, will ban VPN apps on the Google Play Store from November 1 to actively interfere with advertising.
Google updated its Google Play policy last month, setting strict requirements for VPN apps. This includes a rule that such apps “must not manipulate advertising that may affect app monetization.”
Another condition reads: “Only apps that use the VPN service and have VPN as a core functionality can create a secure device-level tunnel to a remote server”.
These measures appear to be designed to secure user data with such VPN services and prevent ad fraud. As part of the new terms and conditions, VPN developers must encrypt data throughout the process.
However, as The Register reports, some developers aren’t too happy with Google’s new regulations, believing the requirements are too broad. Older versions of Blokada and Jumbo could be banned due to the new rules.
Blokada’s developers are also speculating that privacy-focused web search app DuckDuckGo could become a victim of Google’s new rules, although DuckDuckGo’s developer himself believes it will be okay.
Apple applies a similar set of VPN-focused rules to iOS, although interestingly it doesn’t specifically rule out advertising jamming.
Around this time last year, Google announced that it was offering its own VPN service to subscribers to its 2TB+ Google One plans in the UK and elsewhere, after an initial rollout in 2020 in the US.
