Incredibly complete Android app
Mixed results when streaming services are used
There are very few server locations
There is no support for smart routers or appliances
The name Mozilla is a proud tradition in the history of the Internet. It was founded by the first members of the Netscape team in 1998. It is now most famous for its Firefox browser, but since 2020 the company has also offered its full VPN service.
To be precise, the VPN is not actually controlled by Mozilla. It is an ally of Mullvad’s WireGuard-based network server. This means it offers the same 35 traffic routing countries. It’s not a huge selection and doesn’t offer any coverage in Africa, the Middle East, or South Asia. Get a selection of privacy-friendly countries like Switzerland and the Netherlands. There are some remote countries like Brazil and Singapore. There are many servers in popular streaming destinations such as the UK and the US.
A rolling subscription for one month to Mozilla VPN costs PS8.11 and is priced in US dollars. It is cheaper to pay in advance for a longer commitment. There is also a six month option on the PlayStation 38.92 which equates to PS6.49 per month. You can go for the whole year if you like. It’s only ten dollars and comes in at PS4.05 per month. This is a fair price for an annual service. Still, it’s nice to save even more by taking two to three years, as offered by CyberGhost and Private Internet Access.
A subscription allows for unlimited use of up to five devices simultaneously capable of running Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, or Linux. Mozilla doesn’t allow manual configuration, which means you won’t be able to use it on other devices.
Mozilla is best known for its browser. It is surprising that there are no extensions to control the VPN using your browser. On Windows you can click the icon on the system tray to quickly connect to the last server used or view the full interface in two clicks.
Mozilla VPN review: What’s it like to use?
The Mozilla VPN app for Windows features a clean design similar but not identical to the Mullvad app. The main window opens with an on / off switch. The panel below shows the current server location. Click to open the list of incoming servers to the side.
The list can be difficult to navigate. The search box does not respond to typing. The recent server list keeps only two connections. Favorite locations cannot be saved for quick access.
It’s also frustrating that you don’t have the option to choose a country, but you always have to search and select the city you want to connect to. It is not necessary to include this step for countries that have only one server location which is most of them. When there are multiple servers to choose from, there is no way to make a careful choice, as no indication of loading or ping time.
Mozilla VPN also provides multi-hop options that allow you to create the double VPN path between any two servers. However, since, again, no performance or latency information is provided, it is impossible to determine the speed of a given path until you try it. ProtonVPN’s multi-hop routing design ensures your connection doesn’t stop at one point and travels through at least one privacy-friendly country.
There is nothing in the way of advanced settings, however you do have the option of choosing a single DNS server that blocks ads and tracking technologies. Split tunneling is a basic feature that allows you to block certain applications from your VPN by checking a box. You can use the built-in speed tester. However, it won’t appear until the VPN is connected.
The good news for mobile users is that the Android application is almost exactly the same as the Windows one. And we’re not just talking about the layout and design. There’s a significant amount of feature compatibility across platforms, including multi-hop locations, as well as custom DNS and split tunneling options replicated here. The built-in speed tester is capable of making the leap. However, the same complaints apply about the server list and the lack of killswitches (which, to be fair, is a common feature on Android).
In the end, Mozilla VPN is fairly easy to get along with, and we doubt you’ll have any urgent questions. Mozilla VPN does not provide live chat support. Support is only accessible via email. You may be more satisfied with a service that offers fast, interactive assistance if you appreciate it.

Mozilla VPN review: How fast is it?
We previously mentioned that Mozilla VPN uses the Mullvad network and in our performance tests it was pretty fast.
The service was initially tested on a Windows 11 laptop connected to Virgin Media’s home broadband line at 200 Mbps / sec. With the VPN disconnected, the Google Speed Test tool reported an average download speed of 214 Mbit / sec, and connecting to a server in London had little effect, with the test tool reporting an average of 205 Mbit. / sec.
We were also pleased with Mozilla VPN’s performance when connecting to the New York server. While traveling across the Atlantic inevitably slowed things down, we still had an average download speed of 173 Mbit / sec. That’s enough for streaming, downloads, and whatever else you want to try.
We then repeated the test on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 tablet running Android 12. Another solid performance was achieved by the London server with an average speed of 184 Mbit / sec. The Mozilla VPN maintained an impressive speed of 114 Mbit / sec, despite US connections being slower than Android. It is only 10 Mbit slower than the highest score in this test which was, as a record, achieved by ExpressVPN.
Split tunneling is also discussed in the following ways: On Windows, Android, and Linux you can allow most applications to use your ISP’s connection at full speed while selected applications use the VPN.
Mozilla VPN review: Is it good for torrenting and streaming?
Mozilla VPN doesn’t explicitly promise file sharing, however you can test BitTorrent clients and it will work on all servers. Mozilla VPN is capable of transmitting 4K HDR video at 25Mbps / sec. We have observed that it works well.
However, it doesn’t mean it will help you watch what you want. We found that connecting our Windows laptop to a US server allowed us to watch US-only content from Netflix and Hulu, but the Disney + website refused to open until we disabled the VPN. Similar results were also observed for BBC iPlayer via a London server. However, the BritBox TV and Now sites did not open.
The option to download our Android tablet wasn’t helpful at all. The VPN was active and none of the streaming apps allowed us to play videos. However, Netflix and Disney + continued to show their UK bookstores even though our actual location was in the US. It was impossible to log into Hulu nor were we able to watch region-limited Amazon Prime content, though that’s not surprising, because Amazon checks your registered home address, rather than relying on your IP address.

Mozilla VPN review: Is it secure?
Mozilla is based in the United States, which is a major issue when it comes to protecting your privacy – thanks to Edward Snowden, we all know routine surveillance is the norm in the United States. The United States is part of the “Five Eyes Alliance” and regularly shares data with other countries.
However, things aren’t as bad as they seem. Mozilla’s privacy policy states that no records of your online activities will be kept while using its services. Please note that the service is not operated by Mozilla, however, it is operated by Mullvad, which is based outside of Sweden and is protected by Sweden’s strict privacy laws.
Killswitch and multi-hop software features provide additional security. Additionally, you can program the software to automatically initiate an encrypted connection the moment you start your computer. However, Mozilla VPN is not as sophisticated as other VPNs which allow you to mark individual networks as trusted or untrusted. Mozilla VPN does not allow users to choose which server to start with. Instead, it will use the last one you connected to.
Mozilla VPN review: Should you buy it?
Mozilla VPN is a decent VPN service with good security credentials. The server selection is sufficient for most users and the speeds are very good.
However, it’s hard to get excited about the overall package. We’ve seen many VPNs with a wider international reach, sleeker interfaces, and more impressive capabilities to enable unblocking of streaming services at home and abroad. They work on a wider range of devices, allow for more simultaneous connections, and many of them are even cheaper, at least when you sign up for long-term plans.
Mozilla VPN is still very young and we are optimistic that it will expand rapidly. At the moment, we recommend that you check out another option from our list of the best VPNs in 2022. Each recommendation has its advantages, but we would choose one of them over Mozilla VPN in its current state.
