PrivadoVPN review

PrivadoVPN review

VPNs help protect your online activities and hide your IP address by routing your web traffic through a company’s VPN server. PrivadoVPN is exactly that and offers double the number of simultaneous connections. It does this for a fraction of the price of other VPN services. It also offers a free service that is more generous than other VPNs and makes it easy for new users to get started. PrivadoVPN lacks some of the top VPNs’ features, and has not yet released a third-party audit. It’s a good choice for service, but there are some more attractive for-pay competitors that beat the prices of PrivadoVPN’s paid tiers.

How Much Does PrivadoVPN Cost?

PrivadoVPN costs just $7.99 per month, making it one of the most affordable VPNs we’ve reviewed. This is well below the $9.90 average across all VPNs we reviewed. Other VPNs manage to come cheaper but it is a limited list. Kaspersky Secure Connection VPN costs $4.99 per month. However, Mullvad VPN is the most affordable, costing only 5 euros per month ($5.19 at the time of writing).

Amazingly, PrivadoVPN is able to underline its own offering with a completely free VPN subscription. PrivadoVPN has restrictions on the free use of its VPN service, which is the case with almost all other free VPNs we looked at. PrivadoVPN’s free customers are limited to 10GB of data every 30 days, one connection per day and access to just 12 servers. This is more generous than Editors’ Choice winner TunnelBear VPN which only offers 500MB per month, but not as generous as Hotspot Shield VPN’s 500MB/day limit. Interestingly, while these services stop you from using their services after turning off data, PrivadoVPN only throttles the bandwidth of users who exceed their 10GB limit.

While it’s a solid free offering, it doesn’t match Proton VPN’s Editors’ Choice winner. Proton VPN, like PrivadoVPN limits users to a single connection. However, it has 100 servers in the Netherlands as well as the USA and Japan for free and has no bandwidth limit. It’s our top pick overall, in no small part because of its generous free subscription option.

PrivadoVPN offers a discount if you sign up long-term. A one-year subscription with PrivadoVPN costs $59.88 just below the $67.37 average across the VPNs we reviewed. It’s a good deal but it’s not the cheapest. Kaspersky Secure Connection and Ivacy VPN both cost $29.99 per year.

We suggest that customers do not start with a long-term subscription, even if it seems attractive. Instead, you should sign up for a trial or short-term subscription to test the service in your home and see how it works in your daily life. Although it may be more expensive at first, this will save you money in the long run. VPNs are usually on sale.

You can purchase a PrivadoVPN account with a major credit card, PayPal, or semi-anonymously with various cryptocurrencies. Editors’ Choice winners IVPN and Mullvad VPN both go further by accepting cash sent directly to their respective HQs. It is a difficult task in terms of security.

What Do You Get for Your Money With Privado?

What Do You Get for Your Money With Privado?

PrivadoVPN accounts allow users to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously. This is more than double the number of simultaneous connections we’ve observed from other VPN providers, and can easily cover a single device-heavy household or small family. However, some VPNs have completely removed this limitation. Avira Phantom VPN, IPVanish VPN, Editors’ Choice winner Surfshark VPN and Windscribe VPN don’t set a limit on how many devices you can connect at once.

(Editor’s note: IPVanish, PCMag’s parent company, is owned by Ziff Davis.

The basic VPN service protects your internet traffic by routing it from your computer to the VPN server. This keeps your ISP (and everyone else) safe from the activities you do online. It will also hide your IP address, making it difficult to track you. The majority of VPNs offer additional tools to protect your privacy.

Many VPNs claim to offer some level of malware protection, or at least protection from harmful websites. PrivadoVPN does not offer these features. It is difficult to determine their effectiveness. Note though that Surfshark VPN has recently launched an antivirus bundle called Surfshark One. However, we would not advise you to buy it.

Split tunneling is an option that many VPNs offer. This is due to the fact that not all apps work with your VPN. This allows you to choose which apps send their data over your VPN connection and which ones send their data without revealing it. Split tunneling is especially good for high-bandwidth but low-risk activities such as streaming media or playing video games. PrivadoVPN supports split-tuning in its Android or Windows apps. We’d like to see the company make this feature universally available.

The best VPNs offer a multi-hop option that allows you to transfer your traffic between two VPN servers. So, you can be sure that even if one of these servers gets corrupted your traffic will remain safe. PrivadoVPN does not include this feature and has no plans to include it. It’s a feature that most users don’t notice because of the slowdowns that multi-hop connections cause, but we like it. IVPN is unique in that it allows you to choose two servers to use for the connection, while many other services limit you to premade paths.

Some VPNs include push-button access to the Tor anonymization network. It lets you access dark websites hidden from the public eye and provides anonymity in a way that a VPN cannot. It can also slow down your connection. Remember that you don’t need a VPN to access Tor; it’s just convenient. PrivadoVPN does not offer this feature. Editors’ Choice winners NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Proton VPN are two VPNs that offer split tunneling, multihop, and Tor access.

Privado’s kill switch is the only feature it offers. Almost every VPN has this feature that shuts down your internet connection when the VPN is interrupted to stop data from leaking out unencrypted.

PrivadoVPN is a bargain for its price, so it’s no surprise that it isn’t as feature-packed. Be aware that the majority of VPNs, even the cheapest ones, have at most some of these features.

Although VPNs are useful privacy tools, they do not provide protection against all threats. We recommend creating unique and complex passwords with an account manager for passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication when you can, and using antivirus software.

What VPN Protocols Does PrivadoVPN Offer?

What VPN Protocols Does PrivadoVPN Offer?

We prefer open-source VPN protocols that have been tested for potential vulnerabilities. OpenVPN was the standard in this regard. WireGuard is a relative newcomer that promises faster speeds and more advanced encryption technology. We are happy to see that PrivadoVPN supports both, but not fully compatible.

Privado supports OpenVPN, IKEv2 and macOS on Android, iOS and Windows. WireGuard support is currently only available on Android and Windows. This technology is relatively new so it is not a big problem.

Where Are PrivadoVPN’s Servers?

Where Are PrivadoVPN's Servers?

To get the best performance, it is recommended to connect to the closest VPN server. Having many servers in many locations means that a VPN service is able to support you no matter where you are. Additionally, a wide range of server locations means you have more options for spoofing your location as well.

Virtual locations are used by certain companies to provide global coverage. Virtual locations are VPN servers that are set up to appear somewhere other than where they are physically located. They are not necessarily harmful because they allow VPN servers to access local potential danger zones, but the servers themselves are in different locations. However, we would like to see companies open up about this practice. ExpressVPN for example, has servers in 94 countries and only a handful of virtual servers, but HMA VPN covers 190 countries with almost 120 of these locations virtual. It’s not a problem for PrivadoVPN, which says all of its servers are exactly where they claim to be.

PrivadoVPN has servers in 46 countries, which is slightly less than the 51-country average across the services we tested. It has a wide range of locations, which include some in South America and Africa, which are often overlooked by other providers. However, I would like to see it expand in its regional diversity.

The typical VPN service we looked at has about 1,600 servers, but PrivadoVPN comes in at just 335. PrivadoVPN is a less popular and more recent company and it’s no surprise that it comes in at 330. Not all servers are equal and better performance. Cyberghost is currently the largest server network at 8,058.

PrivadoVPN has servers in Hong Kong, Ukraine, and other countries that have repressive internet restrictions like Turkey. It does not offer servers in Russia.

Some VPN companies only use dedicated servers, while others share space. PrivadoVPN told us that it has dedicated servers in some key locations, while sharing space in other locations.

Many VPN companies, including ExpressVPN and NordVPN employ servers with only RAM capabilities to protect their physical infrastructure. PrivadoVPN does not support this method. The company tells us that it uses disk encryption on all of its servers.

How Does PrivadoVPN Protect Your Data?

How Does PrivadoVPN Protect Your Data?

PrivadoVPN states at the top of its policy that it does not keep records of which users have visited the site and that users’ traffic is not monitored. The company further states that it does not record “browsing history, traffic destination data content, IP addresses or DNS queries”, nor does it undertake to sell any data to third parties. This is an excellent statement.

PrivadoVPN privacy policies are very explicit about the information PrivadoVPN collects and why. According to the policy, PrivadoVPN collects crash data from client devices, and also collects mobile identifiers provided by the Google Play and Apple App Stores. However, they can be reset manually by individuals. The policy also says the business will monitor the use of data by free customers to enforce limits on those accounts. However, the policy reiterates that the content of the data is not controlled. This is not unusual, however, an audit could give customers more insight into the problems.

According to the company, it is based in Zug, Switzerland and operates under its legal jurisdiction. Privado Networks AG is the name of the company. PrivadoVPN’s registration and address are available on its website, which is different from other VPN stores.

PrivadoVPN like all businesses must comply with law enforcement requests for information. PrivadoVPN has denied that it can provide information about browsing history, user data, DNS requests, IP addresses, traffic destinations. The company says it can only respond to Swiss law enforcement requests and can only provide email addresses and usernames. This is not unusual though, the different login systems used by IVPN and Mullvad VPN mean that these companies potentially store even smaller amounts of information.

Many companies seek to build trust with their customers by issuing transparency records that record interactions with authorities and police officers, as well as keeping the canaries. PrivadoVPN has none of these, which is a disappointment. Many VPNs also conduct regular third-party audits of their infrastructure and policies. TunnelBear VPN, for example, has one of the longest running and most transparent audits on the market. PrivadoVPN does not yet publish third party audits but says it will in the future.

Hands On With PrivadoVPN for Windows

PrivadoVPN was tested on Windows using an Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast Kit, NUC11PHKi7C ‘Phantom Canyon’). This kit runs the latest version of Windows 11. PrivadoVPN updated its interface very recently, and we were happy to see the improvements. The app is much larger and easier to read. It also has a large and clearly marked button to connect you quickly. The bright purple color scheme is striking, somewhat like ProtonVPN’s recent redesign. PrivadoVPN is now much more accessible than it was a few weeks ago. However, TunnelBear VPN, which is bright yellow and Editors’ Choice winner is still the most suitable choice for new VPN customers.

However, there are some problems. The main window of the app is still not resizable and what you see is the only thing you see. The PrivadoVPN app stays locked to the taskbar, a design choice we don’t mind. Fortunately, there is an un-dock button now available on the main interface.

By default, the app selects the best available server. It would typically be the closest server to you. PrvadoVPN claims that the nearest server was in Montreal, but this seems unlikely. Clicking on the location of the current server allows you to choose the new VPN service. Unlike NordVPN or Proton VPN, you can only see available cities – not the specific servers in the cities. However, you can quickly search the PrivadoVPN database of available locations, or order the list by name or latency. This is a great feature because it makes it easy to find a low-latency, nearby server. We were a little disappointed that PrivadoVPN doesn’t have a map view. This will help you find the right server location.

As we mentioned earlier, PrivadoVPN does not have many additional privacy features. We tested its kill switch and confirmed that it blocked our internet traffic when the VPN connection was down.

We are happy to see that split tunneling – what PrivadoVPN calls SmartRoute – has been added since the beginning of our review of the service. Adding an app to be excluded from the VPN was easy and we especially liked the fact that PrivadoVPN automatically listed all running processes as options to add to the SmartRoute list. Split tunneling is available in other VPNs. ProtonVPN, for example, lets you choose whether to allow or deny certain applications as well as domains and IP addresses from the VPN connection. We verified that the implementation of PrivadoVPN was as expected.

Netflix and other streaming companies try to block VPN use with their services to enforce regional licensing requirements for content. We were able to stream Netflix content without any problems when connected to the PrivadoVPN server in the US.

A VPN that leaks information is not a good idea and that’s why we run every VPN through the DNS Leak Test Tool (opens in a new window). It confirmed that the Privado server was not leaky with DNS requests. However, other VPN servers may not be configured correctly. We also verified that Privado has publicly blocked our IP address.

Hands On With PrivadoVPN for iOS

PrivadoVPN’s iOS app is as easy to use as it is to look at. The trendy neon accent colors underline the white and purple color scheme. We tested the scheme using an iPhone XS with iOS 18.1 for this test.

Well look aside, the app only works to maintain and receive the VPN connection. PrivadoVPN’s iOS app doesn’t include a kill switch or malware blocking like other competitors, such as Proton VPN. Although the app isn’t extremely feature-rich, it can be a great choice for first-time VPN users who don’t want to get lost in the settings menu.

After opening the app, you can choose from a number of countries connected to the PrivadoVPN server. You can select the city in which you want to create your connection by tapping on the name of the country. To connect or disconnect from a VPN server, tap the large circular button at the top of the screen.

We went to DNSLeakTest.com and ran an extensive test to determine if PrivadoVPN was leaking our actual IP address or DNS queries. During our testing, we found no leaks while connected to a server in Frankfurt, Germany.

VPN use can be slow. This is one of the most common complaints. We didn’t notice any significant speed fluctuations or buffering issues while watching Twitch streams or YouTube videos while connected to the VPN in Frankfurt.

Testing PrivadoVPN’s Performance

When you use a VPN, you are all but guaranteed to see an impact on your internet connection. In general, you should expect a decrease in upload and download speeds as well as an increase in latency. To assess how each VPN service works, we found an increase in percentage between Ookla Speedtest (Opens in a new window) results with and without the VPN running. Find out more about how we collect these results in our article on how we test VPNs.

(Editors note: Ookla is owned by Ziff Davis, PCMag’s parent company.)

While many of our readers are concerned about VPN speeds, we don’t put too much emphasis on them. Network speeds are extremely variable depending on the time of day, geographic location and your personal network. It is much more useful to focus on privacy, features and cost when evaluating the benefits of a VPN.

In our testing, we found that PrivadoVPN did not perform exceptionally well. Speedtest results for uploads as well as downloads were reduced by 58.6 percent and 71.6%, respectively. PrivadoVPN’s latency performance was 83% higher than average, according to our results. All of these numbers are higher than the medians we’ve seen for the three categories in about two dozen VPN services.

Below is a breakdown of our results. It’s important to note that we test VPN speeds throughout the year, so the chart changes frequently. For more information on how we interpret these results, read our article on the fastest VPNs.

Getting What You Pay For

PrivadoVPN is definitely a great bargain. PrivadoVPN offers 10 simultaneous connections for a fraction of the cost of other providers. This will cover most households. The free service is impressive, making it easy to get started for anyone new to VPNs. But without a full-fledged set of features, there is nothing else to praise it. It didn’t do well in the speed test either.

We recommend our Editors’ Choice winners for now. PrivadoVPN is not the only VPN that offers more features than NordVPN. Surfshark VPN is also a premium VPN. Both Mullvad VPN and IVPN have more privacy-friendly login options, and have more features than PrivadoVPN. They also cost less than PrivadoVPN. TunnelBear VPN backs up its claims with a history of public audits and has a simple, fun interface. Proton VPN, meanwhile, is a good value all around and is slightly better than PrivadoVPN’s no-cost offering by not imposing any restrictions on users that are free.

Ten simultaneous connections

Some privacy features have been added

PrivadoVPN offers a smooth VPN experience for a very affordable cost. Although the interface has been greatly improved, it still lacks many features.
