Speedify Free VPN’s ability to combine multiple internet connections can be very appealing to certain users, but the low speeds and missing kill switch mean that everything else will be better elsewhere.
Privacy and logging
Speedify’s free plan doesn’t support enterprise kill switches which means that your information can be exposed if your VPN connection fails. Hotspot Shield Free VPN has the same problem, but it’s a privacy concern that most of the top-rated VPNs don’t have.
There is another potential problem here. Windows apps don’t always show a warning when the VPN is down. It is possible to think that you are protected, but the interface of the Speedify app may not be visible.
Speedify engine does not use open source VPN protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN. Instead it uses its own technology. How does it fit? We don’t know because no one outside of Speedify has checked the code, and the company hasn’t verified its security by running an independent audit.
However, this site offers some positive information security. Your data is secured using AES, which is the same high-power algorithm as other top services. The privacy policy (opens a new tab) states that Speedify does not log your visits to websites, the data you exchange with them, or any other information related to your DNS requests. This is what we do.
Windows and Mac apps
The Windows or Mac Speedify app might look a little confusing at first glance. There’s a Connect button at the top, but there’s no default location or a clear list of locations and, in general, the app provides a wealth of information about your status that you almost certainly don’t need to know.
There’s your network interface, for example. A stats panel showing the amount of traffic and top upload/download speeds by day or week. A ‘help’ link for the task of setting up a technical aspect, and a ‘News & Events’ section which contains nothing about the service – or even any information. They all have some advantages but there is no need for them to clutter up the main application window and can be easily hidden in other tabs or panes.
The Menu button takes you to the Settings box. It will also make it difficult for beginners to navigate, at least at first. It offers technical options like Header Compression, Jumbo MTU and ‘Request To Disable DoH. This is good news for professionals because no other provider can offer this level of technical customization. However, it can be confusing for others.
As we already mentioned, important settings are disabled. For example, the kill switch is an important tool that protects your internet traffic in case the VPN goes down but it’s not in the free apps.
Even though we found the location listed in the Settings area, it didn’t work as expected. We hope the app will change our default location later when we tap New York. But it connects right away. We tried connecting again but to no avail. Instead we had to close the list of locations, then the Settings window, and finally click Disconnect from the main screen.
You don’t need a VPN to connect to your nearest location. Just ignore the clutter of the app screen, then tap Connect and Disconnect as needed and you’re done.
If usability is a bigger priority than Speedify’s tweaks to its network, Speedify isn’t the right app or service you need.
Android and iOS apps
The Speedify mobile app has many of the same problems as their desktop cousins. A cluttered interface with overly complex technical language, and even simple tasks don’t always work the way you’d expect.
There is a big improvement. While on Windows we had to regularly switch between the home screen and settings to change places, the mobile app was able to display both areas side by side in portrait. This simple change can bring many advantages such as the ability to connect or disconnect from any server without having to switch screens.
While they are not the best for beginners, experts may find them more useful. Both the Android and iOS apps have unique technical features not found in most of the competition, and if you need this kind of low-level control (or you’re a fan of Speedify’s channel bonding technology), this might be worth checking out. try.
Performance
Speed matters even for no-cost VPNs and we wanted to know how Speedify performs in this regard.
The app is hosted in a UK data center having a 1Gbps connection. This allows the service a lot of headroom and allows it to show off its full capabilities. However the average speed of the app is 93Mbps. This is higher than Hide.me’s 25Mbps. This is sufficient for browsing and many other tasks, but still inferior to the best. In previous tests, PrivadoVPN and TunnelBear all hit 300Mbps or more.
(Please note that Speedify’s channel binding feature was not tested in this review. It will require more than the 2GB limit on the free plan. Download the full trial version to see if channel binding is the right choice for you.
Speedify clarifies that it does not support blocked streaming sites. We tested it anyway and it worked with Netflix UK. This suggests that it may also be able to unblock other libraries.
Final verdict
Speed Up Free VPN’s slow speed and lack of a kill switch make it hard to recommend, but state-of-the-art VPN network technology and a long list of 34 countries make it work for some.
