Despite claims that VPNs are on their way out of corporate networks to be replaced by alternative technologies, research suggests VPNs are indeed here to stay.
This question has been asked frequently and paved the headlines in recent years as pundits and pundits explained how VPNs will soon be replaced by new technologies such as Zero-Trust Network Access (ZTNA), Software-Defined Perimeter (SDP) and Secure Access Service -Edge (SASE). But trends and research confirm that the VPN remains alive and well.
The claim that the VPN is dead is based on the fact that as the network environment changes, so must the technologies and tools that network teams use to manage those networks. But according to experts, the question is less: “Is VPN dead in corporate networks?” and more: “How are companies using VPN alternatives to support hybrid work?”
Research Says VPNs Are Dead — But Are They?
In June 2022, Zscaler and Cybersecurity Insiders conducted a VPN Risk Report study. Of the 351 security professionals surveyed, 95% said their organizations still use VPNs, but 65% said they plan to implement alternative technologies to replace VPNs. Nearly three-quarters of respondents said their organizations are in the process of adopting or have already adopted Zero Trust strategies. These stats seem to indicate that ZTNA will eventually replace VPNs, but further research shows the situation is more complex.
Findings from a December 2021 report by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), a division of TechTarget, suggest that adoption of ZTNA and other VPN alternatives for remote access is growing, but not necessarily replacing VPNs. The study found that organizations with ZTNA strategies continue to use VPNs while using ZTNA for specific use cases rather than full deployment. Almost a third of respondents indicated that their organizations have no plans to expand ZTNA and will continue to use a VPN with ZTNA.
